Three months have passed since Izumida Shokudo, a fish restaurant with an annexed fish market, opened in Kishaba, Kagoshima City. Izumida, a Kanoya-based company, manages the restaurant.

Izumida has been in business for 40 years since the establishment of the fish market Izumida Fresh Fish in Kanoya City. The main store in Kanoya primarily handles fresh fish and processed marine products. The company decided to open a restaurant in Arata to offer customers a dining experience to enjoy fresh marine products. Next to the restaurant, Izumida Fresh Fish Kishaba Branch opened simultaneously, providing fresh fish, side dishes, processed fish products, sashimi, and others.

The signature item on the menu is Sakurajima Kaisen Don, a seafood rice bowl, available in three types: Matsu, Take, and Ume. Prices start at 1,400 yen for the Ume type. Inspired by the topography of the volcano Sakurajima, the dish uses sea urchin to represent the volcanic fumes, tuna tataki and fish roe to represent magma erupting from the volcano, and Kamaage Shirasu (boiled whitebait) to represent the Shirasu Plateau. Other menu items include Fried Horse Mackerel and Seasonal Fish Set and Fish Market Sashimi Set. The restaurant has 11 seats at the counter.

The fish market emphasizes traditional face-to-face sales. “We talk with our customers and prepare the fish according to their wishes,” says the managing director Issei Izumida. The store offers Sashimi Platters to meet customers’ budgets and preferences with reservations made up to the day before. It also offers a lineup of side dishes as “something extra to add to your dinner table.”

Izumida aims to be Japan’s No. 1 Fish Place on Instagram, and its account introduces information on fish, including descriptions of fish, how to identify them, how to prepare them, and recommended ways to eat them.

Opening hours: 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (The fish market is open until 6:00 p.m.). Closed on Wednesdays, Sundays, and holidays.
