December 1 marks the two-month since the opening of Pono Curry (Phone: 099-296-8980), a spice curry specialty restaurant in Nishida, Kagoshima City.
The restaurant, with a large yellow sign, has a counter with six seats. The name “Pono” is Hawaiian word that means “being in perfect alignment and balance physically and mentally.” The owner considers curry to be “yakuzen,” a form of medicinal cooking that combines food and traditional medicines, and opened the restaurant aiming to “provide curry that invigorates the body and mind with a combination of spices and soup that has been tried and tested.”
Spice curry is a Japanese curry made with spices instead of roux, originated in Osaka. The restaurant’s curry dishes include Pork Cartilage Spare Rib Curry (800 yen) and Hinamori Pork Hamburger Steak Curry (900 yen). The curry served is mild so that even people who are not keen on spicy food can enjoy the flavors. Chili powder is available to adjust the hotness. It also offers hot dishes such as Garlic Jalapeño Chicken Curry and others.
In November, the restaurant added new menu items, including Taiwan 88 (800 yen), a Taiwanese-style mixed rice dish topped with spicy minced meat, and Cheese Omelet Curry (900 yen).
The owner says, “I want to make this a place where we can help our customers, staff, and the world find a little harmony. I hope our curry will bring energy to people who are tired after a hard day’s work.”
