On November 29, Bar 51 (Phone: 080-3177-4946) opened on Ichibangai near Kagoshima Chuo Station.

H.Y.S., in Uesonocho, manages the business. The company operates Robata Osamu, Bar Buzz, and Izakaya Tatsuo in Kagoshima City and also opened The Cube Bakery in Arata this September, which markets cube-shaped bread. President Shuichi Takabatake of H.Y.S. has felt that there are not many places to enjoy a drink near Chuo Station after a certain time, which led him to open a bar that stays open until late at night.

The name “51” comes from 51 Meat, the management company of Meat Shokudo Kenji, which used to operate at the location. Takabatake wanted to carry on the spirit of the people who had run the place. The bar has 11 seats at the counter and one table. Numerous whiskey and shochu are displayed on the wall across from the counter.

It offers 50 types of whiskey, including domestic, Scotch, American, and Canadian, with prices ranging from 600 yen to 3,000 yen for a single (30 ml). It also stocks 51 types of shochu and over 100 types of wine, cocktails, and sake. “Our selection is constantly growing,” says Hiroki Tsuji, the bar manager.

The food menu includes six a la carte snacks (from 300 yen), fried and grilled dishes, and fried rice and curry to finish the night. Tsuji’s recommendation is the Suji-ni (700 yen), or stewed beef tendon.

“The bar has a selection of Kagoshima shochu for people from other prefectures to enjoy. If you feel like you haven’t had enough drink, please stop by,” Tsuji said. The bar plans to add meat dishes to its menu in the future.

Opening hours: 9:00 p.m. – 3:00 a.m. Closed on Sundays.
