Two months have passed since Coucou (Phone: 099-813-7798), a Western food and wine restaurant, opened on Shichimi Koji Street in Tenmonkan, Kagoshima City.

Akikazu Nakajima, a Kagoshima native who has worked in French restaurants since 19, opened the restaurant on December 20. He had wanted to open his own restaurant for a long time, and since he had worked at a restaurant in Fukuoka, he had planned to open his either in Fukuoka or Kagoshima.

The name is a French greeting used in close relationships, with the nuance of “Hey” as he wanted to make the restaurant friendly. It has a counter with five seats and tables with eight seats.

Nakajima serves Western-style food based on French cuisine, mainly a la carte rather than courses for customers to enjoy without feeling overwhelmed. The restaurant offers over ten a la carte dishes and five to six main dishes using meat or fish as Today’s Recommendations.

The a la carte menu changes depending on the season, as Nakajima uses seasonal ingredients. A la carte items include Onion Gratin Soup (550 yen) and Oysters Baked in Oven with Herbed Butter (500 yen). For the main, Salmon Encrusted in Pie (1,650 yen) and Grilled Kurobuta Pork Shoulder (1,850 yen) are available.

Nakajima is also a certified sommelier, and the restaurant has shelves lined with wine bottles and a wine cellar. “We welcome people to come just for the wine,” he says. “I hope people will feel comfortable coming to us as a regular restaurant, not a formal place. We want to be a place well-established in the community and enjoyed by the locals.”

Opening hours: 6:00 p.m. – midnight. Closed on Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a national holiday).
