On April 21, Konamon Stand Oshin (Phone: 050-8885-4702), a takeout store specializing in takoyaki and okonomiyaki, opened along Daimonguchi-dori in Kagoshima City.

The owner is Shinji Shimamura, a native of Osaka with five years of experience working at a teppanyaki restaurant in Osaka that served “konamon” (flour-based food). Takoyaki (たこ焼き) is a ball-shaped Japanese snack made of a wheat flour-based batter, and okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) is a savory pancake topped with a variety of condiments. As his pastime is fishing, Shimamura used to visit Kagoshima often for fishing. He liked the atmosphere of Kagoshima and opened the store hoping to offer people a taste of Osaka’s soul food.

The takoyaki is “fluffy and melty,” with a choice of flavors, such as takoyaki sauce, citrus-based ponzu, soy sauce, salt, or sesame oil salt. Prices range from 400 yen for six pieces to 550 yen for nine. Shimamura says the okonomiyaki is made with plenty of yams and “can be served as a side dish with rice.” There are Pork & Egg (550 yen), Squid & Egg (550 yen), Seafood & Egg (700 yen), Noodle & Egg (700 yen), and Okonomiyaki with Yakisoba Noodles (750 yen), to name a few. “I recommend trying the Pork & Egg first,” he says. The store also offers Yakisoba, including a regular (550 yen), mixed, and omelet (700 yen each), and soba-meshi (600 yen).

Shimamura is a former mixed martial arts fighter and currently serves as a referee for K-1 and MMA. When he is working as a referee, the store is closed. He also says, “I always prepare food to serve immediately, but I don’t keep any ready-made, so it would be great if you could order in advance by phone or LINE app.” In the future, he plans to offer home delivery via Uber Eats.

Opening hours: 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Closing days are announced on Instagram.
