On June 1, Hibi-nova (日日nova), a community facility complex in Hiyoshicho, Hioki City, opened on the site of the former Hiyoshi Elementary School, which closed in 2020.

The Ijuin-based company LR manages the facility. The company provides support for online services such as Furusato Nozei Tax Program. Aiming to create a hub where people can gather and revitalize the local community, the company renovated an elementary school building as its first project to make use of a decommissioned school.

The “Hibi (日日)” in the facility name is the first characters of Hiyoshicho (日吉町) and Hioki City (日置市), where the facility is located, and “nova,” which means “new” in Latin and refers to “new star” in English. It reflects their hope that the facility will be a place where people can enrich their days in both work and life, take on new challenges, and be able to express themselves.

The facility uses a renovated two-story elementary school building. The total floor space is 1,475 square meters. It has a Workspace mainly for business use, a Shared Space for multi-purpose use, and a Café & Store.

The Workspace includes coworking space, semi-private small offices, classroom-sized private offices, private offices, and conference rooms. The fee for the coworking space is 16,500 yen for a monthly contract and 1,100 yen for drop-in (weekdays only).

The Shared Space includes an area for workshops and art exhibits, a kitchen for cooking classes and product development and testing, a carpeted floor for reading and dining, and a Japanese-style room.

The kindergarten building on the premises has also been renovated and turned into a Café & Store. The café offers confections and green tea produced in Hioki, and the store carries items related to Kagoshima Prefecture. The company also plans to hold schoolyard markets and product exhibitions.

Takuhiro Yamashita of the Business Planning Department says, “We want to create a facility with a good balance of business, education, and leisure activities. We hope that many people will make use of this facility.”

Business hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Café & Store is open from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (until 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays) and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (closed the following day if a holiday falls on a Monday or Tuesday).
