Takeout store for banh mi & baked goods opens in Aira City, Kagoshima
Mr. and Mrs. Kaminao welcoming visitors
A month has passed since COZY CAFE, a takeout shop specializing in banh mi and baked goods, opened in Kajikicho, Aira City.
The shop is run by the owner, Hiromi Kaminao, and her husband. It is located near the intersection of Route 10 and Amikake River, with the shop facing the river. Kaminao has always had the desire to run a café after her child-rearing years and retirement, as she enjoys making desserts. This desire partially came true on May 22 when the shop opened. Currently, they only offer takeout, but she smiles and says, “In the future, I would like to turn it into a café where people can dine in. I don’t know how many years it will take, though.”
The main product is the Vietnamese-origin sandwich Banh Mi (550 yen). They have a regular item made with roast chicken marinated in five-spice powder, pickled vegetables “Namasu,” cucumber, and coriander, as well as a Daily Banh Mi with changing ingredients every two weeks. The banh mi is prepared by toasting the buns after receiving the order.
Other menu items include fruit sandwiches (350 yen), mixed sandwiches (300 yen), and various baked goods such as scones, cookies, and pound cakes. Drinks include coffee, tea, chai, and homemade lemonade made with domestic lemons (from 320 yen).
Since the shop opens at 7:30 a.m., many customers stop by before going to work. Scones are particularly popular, and although they make sure to have them ready when they open, they usually sell out by mid-morning.
“We would like to develop gift sets and plan events such as fairs where we offer sweets we don’t regularly sell,” says Kaminao. “We hope people will casually drop by.”
Opening hours: 7:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (or until sold out). Closed on Wednesdays and Sundays. Temporary closures will be announced on Instagram. There are ten parking spaces available.
