On July 1, the dog photo exhibition “Kagoshima Kenmin Exhibition” opened at the shop and gallery SOMETHING in Tenmonkan, Kagoshima City.

Pet photographer, Shinya Hisanaga, organized the exhibition. Hisanaga, who has been doing on-location photography for family portraits, decided to specialize in pet photography after capturing a “captivating shot” while photographing a client’s beloved dog.

Hisanaga opened the dog-exclusive photo studio Dog Studio Kagoshima in Shimoarata this January. Since then, he has photographed around 150 dogs, and the exhibition features approximately 55 of those studio shots.

Hisanaga engages with dog owners walking their dogs in the park and captures their moments for his ongoing Instagram series titled “Talking to Dogs During Walks.” He showcases these encounters and the resulting photographs in videos, which have accumulated a total of 80,000 views. At the show, he also displays around 60 works from the same series.

Additionally, the exhibition features photographs taken during a photo session held during cherry blossom season at Dog Garden SORA in Akune City, as well as photos taken by five families living with their dogs in Kagoshima Prefecture. Panels conveying the current situation of rescue dogs are also set up, and a portion of the proceeds from merchandise and admission fees will be donated to dog rescue organizations.

“I hope people will enjoy the lively expressions on the dogs,” says Hisanaga. During the exhibition period, visitors are allowed to enter with their dogs.

Opening hours: 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. The admission fee is 300 yen. The exhibition will run until the 12th of this month.
