“Neutral T-Shirts” lined up at the select shop BRIDGE

On July 25, Kagoshima’s select shop BRIDGE began selling “Neutral T-Shirts” that can be worn throughout the year.

The T-shirt is described as “cool on hot days and warm on cold days.” It is made using the patented moisture/thermo-regulating fiber “37.5,” which was invented in the United States. The concept for the T-shirt was conceived by Yuji Kakimoto, the president of Kakimoto Design Kikaku in Tokyo, who wanted to create clothes that can be worn year-round, regardless of summer or winter. Since Kakimoto was born in Isa City, Kagoshima Prefecture, he chose to start selling the product from Kagoshima and selected BRIDGE as the first venue.

“The fabric is made using active particles of volcanic sand that have a high absorbency capacity and transfer infrared energy emitted by the body to transport moisture away from the skin,” explains Kakimoto. He said, “When the body is relatively cool, the particles absorb and retain infrared radiation to help keep you warm. If the body warms and produces sweat vapors, the reactive particles use infrared energy to transfer the extra moisture to the surrounding environment, providing cooling.”

The entire production process, from fabric manufacturing to sewing, is done in Japan. Kakimoto is concerned about the high rate of imported apparel in Japan (98% in 2019) and is determined to promote Japan’s excellent clothing technology to the world, emphasizing the importance of “Made in Japan.”

He also envisions expanding overseas in the future. “Especially in hot and humid Southeast Asia, there should be a demand for T-shirts with such functions as ours. I am eager to spread Japanese-made T-shirts abroad and revitalize the textile industry,” he added.

The price of the Neutral T-Shirt is 8,350 yen. It is available only in black and comes in unisex sizes S, M, L, and XL. It is also available on its online store.
