It has been a month and a half since the opening of eight beat, a music and English school with a café located on Zero Bell Street in Kagoshima’s Chuocho.

The owner, Arikawa Issei, is a professional drummer from Kagoshima, who plays in a band, supports other artists, and teaches the drums. Since he had less opportunity to perform professionally due to the coronavirus pandemic and had more time to reflect on the future, he opened the school on March 22 with the hope of “creating a place that could provide an opportunity for people to connect with others and help them enrich their lives.”

The music school has a team of active professional instructors who offer lessons in drums and percussion, rock and pop piano, bass, computer music composition, saxophone, flute, ukulele, violin, and songwriting. “We also have various instruments available and cater to a wide range of people, from beginners to those who want to learn music seriously,” said Arikawa. As for English classes, they offer daily conversation and English test preparation, as well as lessons for preschoolers. Both one-on-one and group classes are available. Reservations are required by phone, email, or through the website.

Tuition fees are set at Fixed Lesson (12,650 yen per month for individuals, 8,800 yen per month for pairs and groups) and Free Lesson (from 5,500 yen per lesson). Discounts such as family discount and multi-course discount are also offered.

The cafe menu includes eight beat smoothie (690 yen), which is decorated with vegetable powder made in Japan; seasonal smoothie parfait (1,100 yen); an-butter toast (650 yen) with sweet bean paste and butter; and seasonal toast (800 yen).

“We also hold student concerts. I would like to expand the scope of our activities and make the school even more enjoyable. I hope to liven up Kagoshima City with music,” Arikawa said.
