Spanish bar and gallery Tres Gatos opens in Kagoshima – Flamenco lessons also offered
Inside Tres Gatos
Tres Gatos, a café-bar serving Spanish cuisine with a gallery and flamenco studio, opened in Tenmonkan, Kagoshima City, on June 13.
The café-bar is co-owned by Tokuda Shiho, a flamenco dancer, and her sister Akina, who has been involved in arts. They took over the former studio bar El Sonido and opened it as a new business. The name means “three cats” and represents its three functions as a Spanish bar, gallery, and flamenco studio, which can also be used as an event space. Shiho said: “Like a whimsical cat, we want to be flexible with the shop space to match the interests of people who gather here and offer a variety of things as a center connecting Kagoshima with art and Spain.”
The café offers coffee (from 400 yen) made with beans roasted by Coffee Beans Shop Cherry and sweets from Sweet William, a store that sells sweet treats only on consignment. Polvoron, a traditional Andalusian cookie (150 yen); Roscos de Vino, a wine-flavored ring-shaped cookie (250 yen); and freshly squeezed juice (from 600 yen) are also available.
El Marino, a Spanish bar in Meizancho, prepares the food, and the lineup includes Tortilla (Spanish omelets: 500 yen), Tapas Set (1,000 yen), and Tres Gatos Senbero (1,000 yen), a set of drinks and snacks. Various Spanish beer, wine, and sherry, as well as craft beer, are available.
The gallery space has a permanent exhibition of glass accessories and other items and hosts special art shows and related talk events. In the studio space, lessons of the Tokuda Shiho Flamenco School and events related to art and Spain are regularly held. This space is also available for rent and can be used for private use, exhibitions, and other events.
“We hope people come and enjoy our gallery’s exhibitions and tea and drinks. Iced coffee and Spanish beer are perfect for a hot summer day,” Akina added.
