Specialty shop in Kagoshima starts offering shaved ice with baked sweet potatoes this summer
Oimo Milk Shaved Ice
3515 (Sangojugo), a shop that specializes in baked sweet potatoes and desserts, is now offering Oimo Milk Shaved Ice for the summer season only.
The shop opened in March to offer yakiimo (baked sweet potatoes) and desserts made with Beni-Haruka, a variety of sweet potato cultivated in red volcanic soils of Nagashima. Fusano Mano, the manager, said: “Summer is all about shaved ice. We went through a lot of trial and error to find a way to make yakiimo taste good as shaved ice. In the end, we managed to create a paste that has the right texture, feel, potato-ness, and taste of sweet potato.”
The shaved ice is topped with a generous amount of paste sauce and sweet potatoes in syrup, with cold baked potatoes inside. All the potatoes used in the shop are Beni-Haruka from Nagashima. Customers can also choose to have it with homemade yakiimo ice cream or vanilla ice cream.
“It’s all about yakiimo. The hot summer is the best time to eat sweet potatoes, which are rich in nutrients,” said Fusano. “We hope to make Tenmonkan’s summer more exciting with shaved ice that even the locals have never seen before.”
The prices are 800 yen with yakiimo ice cream, 750 yen with vanilla ice cream, and 650 yen without ice cream.
Opening hours: 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. (The kitchen closes at 6:00 p.m.). Closed on the first and third Tuesday of the month.
