A month and a half have passed since the opening of Anraku Shokudo, a restaurant featuring home-style cooking near Kagoshima Chuo High School.

The restaurant, run by Anraku Masato and his wife, opened on July 7. It serves lunch sets and takeout boxed lunches during the day, but at night it turns into a bar, serving dishes to go with the large selection of shochu it carries. The restaurant covers an area of 66 square meters and can accommodate eight people at the table seating area, eight at the tatami seating area, and five at the counter.

For lunch, it offers a Daily Special (880 yen) and Curry Lunch (680 yen) with coffee. The Daily Special comes with five kinds of small dishes such as nimono (simmered meat and vegetables), salad, and omelet. The most popular dishes have been Chicken Nanban and Gyoza dumplings.

At night, in addition to home-style dishes, it offers a la carte dishes such as Gyoza dumplings (600 yen), Japanese fried chicken (800 yen), and pork and cucumbers mixed with miso (500 yen). “We have a lot of businesspeople coming here, so we don’t use garlic in our dumplings and fried chicken so that the smell doesn’t bother them,” says Masato, the chef. It also offers a wide variety of shochu, and customers can choose from more than 30 varieties.

About ten takeout boxed lunches are prepared each day (starting at 400 yen). The contents change from day to day, but the main dishes are often fried chicken and nimono. Customers can also purchase coffee beans grown on Okinoerabu Island, located in the Amami archipelago.

“We are getting more repeat customers who often come from the nearby office district. We want to make this a community-based restaurant and bar,” he added.

Opening hours: 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. (subject to change at the request of the national and prefectural governments).
