The art exhibition “Gallery ASAHIYA: ZOO in the Greenery” opened on August 20 at an event hall on the second floor of Maruya Gardens.

The exhibition showcases and sells works created through Kobo Asahiya, an art activity at Asahigaoka Gakuen to support people with intellectual disabilities. The theme is “Creatures in the Greenery”, and the users and staff worked together to create the artworks. Colorful paintings and objects such as zebras and rhinoceroses are on display.

On Saturdays and Sundays during the exhibition, there will be an ASAHIYA Caravan Shop, where visitors can purchase handcrafted goods. Leather items, ceramics, T-shirts, and horseshoe artworks produced through the activity will be on sale. There will also be a workshop where participants can decorate a board with their favorite words using the wood alphabet (participation fee: 1,000 yen).

The exhibition is part of a joint art project called “art brut,” which was launched on August 20 by Amu Plaza Kagoshima, Maruya Gardens, and Yamakataya, with exhibitions of works, workshops, and sales being held simultaneously at each venue. The project is supported by the Kagoshima Prefecture Welfare Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities.

Matsumi Chigusa, a spokesperson for Maruya Gardens, said, “This is a fun exhibition where you can see the creatures spending their time in a green space. We hope that this will be an opportunity for people to feel the preciousness and beauty of life through the diverse expressions of each art form.”

The exhibition is open from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. (until 5:00 p.m. on the last day). Free admission. Until September 5.
