LA NATURE, an artificial flower specialty store in Yojiro, Kagoshima City, restarted its flower design lessons in October.

The store opened in December 2019. Haruka Deki, the owner, studied floral design at a vocational school in Osaka and ran Florist NATURE in Taniyama for 16 years. After taking two years off to spend more time with her family, she obtained a certificate in artificial flower making and arrangement and opened her own store.

“Artificial flowers have a texture and beauty that can be mistaken for fresh flowers, and they do not require watering. You can also create different designs using the same flower materials,” says Deki. She also provides on-site production services for companies and clinics. “I recommend them because they require little care and are hygienic. Moreover, if the wedding or event is postponed, you can use them later,” she said.

The lessons had been on hiatus for a while due to the pandemic but resumed this month. Deki offers one-on-one lessons by appointment and decides on the schedule and lesson content based on the students’ requests. “I can teach you how to arrange swags, wreaths, baskets, and even wedding bouquets,” said Deki. The class is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. She said that two or three friends could take lessons together. Each lesson takes about an hour and a half to two hours as the students will have to remake flower arrangements several times. Students can choose any floral materials they like, and the amount used will be tallied at the end of the lesson. The average cost is 4,000 yen per person, including the cost of materials.

Deki added: “The only way to get better at making them is to make a lot. How many you have completed, and the process itself, will give you ideas. Why don’t you try making your original Shimenawa (Shinto sacred rope) for the New Year?”

Opening hours: 10:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (extended on days with lessons). Closed on Tuesdays (available when there is a reservation).
